Arctic Family Self-drive Adventure

Arctic Family Self-drive Adventure

A tour with three very different kinds of destinations. Starting from hills of tundra, then driving southwest to Ylläs ski area and ending up in the home city of Santa Claus Rovaniemi.

1. Saariselkä  is the most northern skiing resort in Finland. It is a ski village known as a cross-country skiing paradise but there are also 15 slopes and a lot of other activities, for example the longest toboggan slide in the country (=over 1 km). Part of Saariselkä is located in the Urho-Kekkonen National Park. The most famous Arctic hills are called Kaunispää, which is next to the village and Kiilopää, which is 17km away from the village. Urho Kekkonen National Park  (=UKK-park) established in 1983 and covering 2 550 square kilometres, it is one of Finland's largest protected areas. It is named after the former president Urho Kaleva Kekkonen.

Muotka Wilderness Lodge  has a long tradition in serving cross-country skiers. This fell hotel is located next to the Urho Kekkonen National Park by the road leading to the Kiilopää fell center. It is an ideal place for independent, shorter fell skiing trips, even for inexperienced cross-country skiers as there are marked ski-tracks leaving from the yard and leading to the Saariselkä fell line. You will have a 2-hour instructed cross-country skiing session by our teacher Petri.

The lodge is built by a river on taiga.   You will stay three first nights in a panorama log cabin, then one night in an aurora cabin. If you are lucky and the night is bright, you can spend four magical nights under millions of stars and dancing northern lights. Note! If you wish to visit also the village of Inari, where the Sámi museum Siida and the Sámi parliament Sajos are, we can well book the aurora cabin there as well (the same hotel has a brand new resort by lake Inari, no influence on costs).

Before leaving the northermost Lapland, you will have the highlight of your tour, the husky safari. Guesthouse Husky  has over 140 Alaskan huskies. The Alaskan huskies  are friendly, social and active dogs, which are very eager to run and pull the sledge. They like working!  Sled-dog ride  is a great way to experience the Lappish nature in winter at its best.

2. Ylläs  is the largest ski resort in Finland. The Ylläs hill itself is 719m high. There are two villages, one on the northern side called Äkäslompolo and one on the southern side called Ylläsjärvi. Äkäslompolo is the original ski village. From both sides you have equal access to the slopes. By skiing the Finns understand cross-country skiing, which takes place on ski-tracks in nature. In Ylläs area there are alltogether 330 kilometers of ski-tracks, out of which 38 kilometers are illuminated. When it is not too cold, it is nice to take a day tour and ski slowly from ski café to ski café.

If you have downhill skiing in mind, you could not choose a better destination in Finland as Ylläs is the biggest ski resort with its 63 slopes, 20 ski lifts and 53 slope kilometers.Ylläs ski school is very famous and our child as well as adult guests have enjoyed their technique courses there. We have included equipment, si passes and ski school for one day at Ylläs.

Aurora Estate  is a small boutique type of a hotel - or a quality guesthouse by lake Ylläsjärvi with spectaculous views over the lake, especially on aurora nights. This hotel has several different types of sauna. We have included normal sauna with outdoor jacuzzi, which should be fun for all of you.

Places to visit on the way to Rovaniemi:

  • Lainio Snow Village: Less than 10 kilometers from your hotel there is a Snow Village, a hotel, restaurant and even a chapel built of snow. We suggest to visit there before leaving Ylläs and have soup lunch there.
  • Levi skiing centre and a reindeer farm called Levin Lapinkylä. They have a nice cafateria in an old house and reindeers in yard. This might be worth stopping for coffee.

3. Rovaniemi  is the regional capitol of Lapland. It is located at the Arctic circle. It is also known as the home town of Santa Claus.

Vartiosaari has existed in maps by the name "Guard Island" since 1712. Pharmacist Castren owned the island in 1880 and named it Ainola. it then private summer residence. The Defence Forces of Finland owned the island from 1939 to 1944 and used it for military operations. The guerilla group had even their headquarters on the island. In 1973 the island became a private summer residence. From 1983 Vartiosaari has welcomed guests. The island takes you by surprise! The small island is literally full of  buildings in different styles and a marvellous camp fire, where you can walk on your own in the night to watch auroras.

As you are on an island, you have to get on frozen river and try ice-fishing. Our guide will come to your hotel so you do not need to get anywhere.

Places to visit in Rovaniemi:

  • Santa's village to see Father Christmas himself sitting in his post office throughout the year (Note! This is a very touristic but in a way a "must-see-place"!
  • Arktikum museum there telling you about life in the Arctic and challenges of the Arctic areas like global warming
  • Pilke science centre telling you about forests, which are "the gold of Finland".
