Family break in Rovaniemi and Pyhä

Family break in Rovaniemi and Pyhä

You will try exciting activities in snow, you will taste delicious Lappish food and if you are lucky, observe northern lights on three nights in a row!

Rovaniemi  is the regional capitol of Lapland. It is located at the Arctic circle. It is also known as the home town of Santa Claus. You can meet Santa throughout the year in his post office at the Arctic Circle. We recommend to start your visit from the Arkikum museum, which gives you facts first abut the Arctic.

Vartiosaari has existed in maps by the name "Guard Island" since 1712. Pharmacist Castren owned the island in 1880 and named it Ainola. it then private summer residence. The Defence Forces of Finland owned the island from 1939 to 1944 and used it for military operations. The guerilla group had even their headquarters on the island. In 1973 the island became a private summer residence. From 1983 Vartiosaari has welcomed guests. The island takes you by surprise! The small island is literally full of  buildings in different styles.

The island offers a great chance for wathing northern lights as it is just outside the citycentre illumination. You can make a night walk and sit down by open fire to warm up and look at the night sky. If you are lucky, you'll the northern lights dancing there.

Activities in Rovaniemi:

1) Ice-fishing (or snowshoeing) takes place at your hotel. The guide meets you in yard, gives you the equipment and takes you out on frozen river. You will make a hole in the ice and start jigging. Catching a fish like this is great fun.

2) Blazing salmon outdoors (can also be meat if you are not fishlovers) is fun. You sit by campfire and see, how the chef prepares your meal. This hotel has also a Lappish hut type of a restaurant, where you can eat your dinner in a comfortable setting indoors.

3) Husky safari takes you through the forest in a snowy landcape. Two people are sharing a team of huskies. After a break you will change and if somewone does not want to try mushing, he/she can sit in sleigh all the time and the other one is mushing. This is the most memorable activity accoding to our clients.

4)  Santa's village is located at the Arctic Circle. This is the place, where Santa Claus has his post office. You can meet Santa free of charge but be prepared for some queuing. In the village there are also other activities from Snowman's world (ticket included)to miniature snowmobiling. Alternatively you can choose to visit the Arktikum museum. In both destionations there is lunch available if you feel hungry.

Pyhä-Luosto National Park  is known for its 35 kilometer chain of hills and its extra-ordinary beautiful nature. In the middle of the park there is an amethyst mine, the only gemstone mine in the world that welcomes visitors.

Pyhä  is a skiing center especially well known well among the backcountry skiers. There are 7 backcountry skiing areas available. Guided backcountry skiing tours are organised by the ski-school. There are also 150km of cross -country ski-tracks, part of them lighted so you can ski also during the polar night.

Activities in Pyhä:

1) Visit to the Amethyst mine is taken by a pendolino, a kind of "snow train". We'll do this at arrival so you will see the magnificent landscapes of Pyhä-Luosto National park in its beauty right away from top of Lampivaara hill. You  will then be seated in a wooden shelter, get some berry juice and hear a bit more about the purple gem stone called amethyst

2) Aurora snowshoe trekking is easy and fun way to get places where you can experience the beauty of snow-loaded forest. The most charming national park and it's surroundings is full of interesting things to see, hear and learn. Darkness makes it even more exciting. If you are lucky, you will see northern lights dancing on the sky.

3) Reindeer sleigh ride takes you to ½ -hour reindeer sleigh ride through the frozen swamps, where you can enjoy a postcard scenery and healing silence beyond.  After the calming sleigh ride we feed the reindeer, take nice pictures and gather to warm kota hut to enjoy a cup of hot drinks and homemade pastries.

There is a lot to do in Pyhä ski village. You can go ice-karting, downhill skiing, fatbiking, snowmobiling or cross-country skiing for example. Later you will find also sample prices for activities not yet included in this plan..
