Guided historical walk in Suomenlinna for groups, Helsinki
Suomenlinna was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list as a unique monument of military architecture in 1991. The construction work started in 1748 during the Swedish era and took 40 years. The fortress was given a name Sveaborg, in Finnish it was called Viapori. It was never involved in actual battles. In 1808, after a mysterious surrender Viapori was besieged by the Russian forces in the Russo-Swedish war. The Russian era started.
Suomenlinna is the most important sightseeing of Helsinki, open throughout the year. First of all, the ferry journey makes it possible to see Helsinki from the sea. The ferry is part of the Helsinki City Transport so it makes most sense to buy a day ticket and use it for the ferry as well. There is no entrance fee to the island but you get most out of your visit if you attend a guided tour.
Guided walk in Suomenlinna starts by watching a wide-screen presentation in the Suomenlinna museum and then continuous by a guide, who will talk more about the Russian era. You will hear about those eventfull 110 years when Suomenlinna became garrison town rather than a defensive fortress. Active social life but also wars and political upheavals took place.
