Holiday week in Lapland: Nangu & Muotka

Holiday week in Lapland: Nangu & Muotka

Relaxing week in the early winter of the northernmost Lapland with sports and snowmobiling.

Northern lights are dancing on the sky in this area on 3 out of 5 nights. However, you can only see them on a clear night, when clouds are not covering them. Aurora hunting means finding open spots, where the sky is clear.  The experience is magical. As you will have a photographer with you, you will get tips, how to catch northern light moments as great photographs.. Please note that there is no guarantee you will see northern lights as it is a natural phenomenon.

Nangu is a wilderness boutique hotel for adults 20km out to the wilderness from Ivalo village. It is located by lake Ivalo. This small hotel has a cozy lounge, where guests can spend time by fireplace. Superior rooms with lakeview also available.

Muotka Wilderness Lodge  has a long tradition in serving cross-country skiers. You will arrive in this charming hotel after a sightseeing in Inari and Saariselkä area by car. The fell hotel is located next to the Urho Kekkonen National Park by the road leading to the Kiilopää fell center in the Kakslauttanen area. The landscape is extraordinary beautiful. Snow arrives early to the hills. That is why you can see many local skiers here at the shift of November and December.

You will stay in a riverside cabin in a room with own sauna. There is a winter swimming possibility every night here. You can warm up sauna and dip yourselves in freezing water if you like.

Activities included:

1) Aurora hunting by snowmobiles

By snowmobiles you are able to search for the ideal aurora watching spot and drive a bit further out than by snowshoes or sleighs. Two people will share a snowmobile. This tour will take place in any weather.

2) Snowshoe rental is recommended as if you take a small group there are always also very slow people along so you get only cold, when waiting for them. Therefore in myopinion it is nicer just to go on your own and have lunch in the cozy restaurant. It is possible it is not at all safe to get on lake ice yet but the personnel will help you with a safe route.

3) Sledge-dog safari 2,5h

This husky safari takes you to the wild Lappish nature. Two guests are sharing a husky team. After the coffee break in a genuine Lappish hut turns are changed so both guests get to try mushing. IN the evening a campfire night at the hotel after dinner.

4) Cross-country skiing 2-3h with an instructor

You will be taken to Kiilopää trekking centre, which is owned by the skiing fedeeration of Finland. They have proper skies and proper skiing instructors unlike the hotels. Petri will teach you to ski in a short time.  In case you choose winterpark (tobogganing) on Thursday at saariselkä, you can keep the skies until departure day so you can take small ski tours whenever you want. In case you go snowboarding on Thursday, you'll leave your equipment to Kiilopää right away after skiing.

5) Ski Saariselkä / Winter park 2h or snowboarding 3h

Winterpark gives you a ski pass of 2h, toboggan rental, ice skating, snowtubing and ice stock sport. The toboggan ride down the slope is1800m. Alternative you can get a 3h ski pass and snowboard package (in this case cross-country skies will be returned.

6) Snowmobiling to a reindeer farm

You will drive by snowmobiile to a reindeer farm, where you will first hear a little bit about reindeer.  You will then take a short reindeer sleigh ride, have lunch and drive back to the hotel. The starting time of this activity is at 10am and that can not be changed. If you want, you can choose a 2h snowmobiling instead and have it later in the afternoon (-96€/person but you'll miss lunch, too)
