Midsummer in Finland: Mäntyharju and Helsinki

Midsummer in Finland: Mäntyharju and Helsinki

Midsummer at the countryside in a charming bed & breakfast in Mäntyharju close to the Repovesi National Park. Back in Helsinki you will visit the SIbelius Finland Experience concert as well as the Söderskär lighthouse and Suomenlinna fortress.

This bed and breakfast is charming. The host couple lives in this wooden house, which only has two rooms in the main house and two more in yard. It is located in Mäntyharju, a small town by lake Pyhävesi. The biggest attraction of the town is Art Centre Salmela, which is one of Finland’s biggest summertime cultural events.  Salmela’s exhibition spaces are joined together by a lovely landscape park with gazebos. The landscape park was opened in 2002 and it includes the sculpture park, gazebos and café-restaurant Kesäheinä which functions both as an exhibition space and promoter of culinary art. repovesi National Park is located close by and in order to show you Finnish lake nature we have included a waterbus sightseeing on lake Repovesi, which can be replaced by a motor boat fishing tour if you are willing to pay the extra fee and we'll find a fishing guide (the boat we have already).

Repovesi National Park (15km2) together with the private Aarnikotka Strict Nature Reserve (14km2) owned by UPM is located in the area of Kouvola and Mantyharju. You can find there large forest areas as well as high cliffs and tens of smaller and bigger lakes with translucent water. The fauna is versatile. There are red-throated divers, flying squirrels, owls, lynxes, pine martens, elks, otters and beavers living in the area.

HELSINKI

Söderskär Lighthouse   was built  during the Russian era in 1862 on the island of Mattlandet. Location was chosen because it was possible to sea from there far out on the open sea, even 15 miles away (appr. 27 kilometres). The hexagonal, sixstorey and 40m tall lighthouse tower was designed by Ernst Lohman and it represents the neogothic architectural style. To make sure the lighthouse would stand time, the lower part was built of stones and only the upper part of bricks. However, it was later found out that the tower needed to be stiffened.

New types of lens called Fresnerl lens were used. The source of light was built out of  crystal prisms, which made the light  very visible. The light flashed every 90 seconds. The lighthouse crew consisted of four keepers, who had their families over there as well.  In 1957 the lighthouse was automated and converted for acetylene. It served until 1989.

Skafur-Tour owner Riitta will come to pick you up in the morning from your hotel and come with you to the Söderskär island and then take you for lunch and to the iittala design pavillion and outlet. She'll drive you to your city centre hotel.

Sea fortress Suomenlinna is an impressive witness of the Finnish history. It is listed among the Unesco World Heritage sites. A bus will take you to the historical centre of Helsinki, where you will have lunch first and see the famous neo-classicist Senate Square. You will then walk five minutes to take a water bus to Suomenlinna, where you will have a guided tour.  You will walk through the fortifications and hear fascinating stories about fortress life in past and about Finnish history.
