Northern Lights Break August-September

Northern Lights Break August-September

Active outdoor life by foot and canoe and a lot of Sámi culture!

Inari  is the centre of Sámi culture in Lapland. This is, where the Sámi parliament and the Sámi museum Siida are located. Lake inari is the thrid biggest lake in Finland, also called as the "sea of Lapland".

This tour starts by hiking to the beautiful Otsamo Fell to see the lake Inari. The first three kilometers to the top of the fell are demanding due to the steep climb to the summit but getting to the peak is rewarding. You will see not only lake Inari but also hundreds of fells, hills, lakes and rivers. We hike back to the village Inari through untouched forest and along the Juutuajoki River, 9 km all the way to your hotel.

Next day you will visit the Sámi parliament and the museum and have a cruise by electric catamaran to the wholy island, which got its name after the Sámi god Ukko.

Tankavaara  is the gate to the gold mining district of Lapland. Here you can learn a lot about gold panning all over the world and even see the masters at work in the Gold Panning World Champioships 5.-8.8. The Tankavaara Gold Village got new owners a few years ago and it has been developing ever since. In February this year they opened a new, beautiful log hotel and another building will be ready by summer so the standard of accommodation has increased dramatically.

Visit to the Sámi Cultural Gallery Magga-Hetta gives you a closer touch to the mythodology of the Sami culture. Tuula-Maija Magga-Hetta is a Sámi artist, who has collected Sámi art, textiles and everyday utilities to the old Lappish house of her parents in Vuotso village. She can tell you using drums and singing about the beliefs of the indegenous Sámi people.

After visiting Tuula-Maija, you will hike 2,5m to the top of Pyhä-Nattanen to see its tor-like forms which consist of granitic bedrock lie at the top of the Pyhä-Nattanen Fell south of Saariselkä Resort in the Sompio Nature Reserve. They are more than five meters high and look like the work of an artist, although they were sculpted by nature. These tors probably consist of the most durable parts of the granitic rock, where the weathering has been slower than in the surrounding rock.

Before leaving home it is good to get fresh air and make a day tour outdoors by a canoe. Canoeing trip starts from Tankavaara Gold Village, where our guide will meet you. From there it’s a short 10-minute drive to the river Tankajoki. Our guide will show and teach you all the necessary information about canoeing and safety.

Canoeing in the winding river Tankajoki is a tranquil experience without any large rapids. The canoeing trip is about 15km long and meanders in beautiful forest and heath landscapes. While canoeing you have plenty of opportunities for photographing.  There are a couple of tiny rapids on the way that speed your journey nicely. On the way, you will have lunch by the fire that includes soup, bread, cookies and hot tea or coffee. After the trip you will land in Purnumukka Sámi village, from where our guide will drive you back to Tankavaara Gold Village to pick up your lugage and then straight ahead to the airport. .
