Summer Photo Tour: National Parks of Finland 7.-13.8.

Summer Photo Tour: National Parks of Finland 7.-13.8.

Forests and lakes in middle of the summer, when forests are dark green and water in the lakes warm for swimming. You are staying in cottages by the most beautiful lakes and having landscape and sunset photographing workshops in the National Parks of Repovesi, Linnansaari and Koli. Guided by landscape photographer Valentino Valkaj.

Repovesi National Park (15km2) together with the private Aarnikotka Strict Nature Reserve (14km2) owned by UPM is located in the area of Kouvola and Mantyharju. You can find there large forest areas as well as high cliffs and tens of smaller and bigger lakes with translucent water. The fauna is versatile. There are red-throated divers, flying squirrels, owls, lynxes, pine martens, elks, otters and beavers living in the area. The differences in altitudes are relatively high, which makes hiking physically challenging.

Linnansaari National Park  consists of hundreds of islands and islets on Saimaa, on home waters of Saimaa ringed seal. Here you will see the lake nature at its best: wide lakeviews, islands, cliffs, and behind them flourishing groves. On the main island Linnasaari you can climb up to hill Linnavuori, where you can admire the wide lake views. Also recommended is to visit the nature heritage center Oskari in Rantasalmi.

Safari to the labyrinthine Linnansaari archipelago  is taken either by a classic wooden motorboat enjoying the beautiful nature or by canoe paddling slowly. You will land on the northern side of Linnansaari and hike up 500m to the Linnanvuori, where you can admire the great views over the National Park. Yu can choose either a boat trip for 1-7 people 3h guided in Finnish, English or German or a paddling trip for 1-14 people 5h guided in Finnish, English or Swedish.

HakoApajan Aikhituvat are the life's work of Esa Heiskanen. The main building called Aikhitupa has been built of 1000-4000 years old logs lifted from the bottom of the lake next to Aikhituvat. The logs of the additional part of the building again are beams used in the early days for timber rafting. In summer time there is and exhibition in the other half of the building. Many interesting artefacts, for example a weapon cache were found during the construction time from the bottom of the lake. These artefacts combined with the ancient history tell you about the past of the region. Exhibition outside shows, how log can be prosecced by hand and what can be created out of it.

You will stay in small cottages by the small lake next to Aikhitupa. The to cottages we mainly use are called Louhenkolo (2-4 people) or Kivitasku (4-6 people). If the group is bigger than 8 people, also other cottages available will be used.

Koli National Park  is also called the national landscape of Finland. Why? Its views have inspired artists over the years and the landscape has been written, painted and composed in numerous pieces of part. The hills are remains of the Karelidian chain of mountains formed almost 2 milliard years ago. The highest point of Koli hill chain as well as whole southern Finland is called "Ukko-Koli", which is located 347 meters above the sea.

Day tour to the Koli nature  starts from the nature heritage center Ukko. The first hiking leg is 6 kilometres passing the first of the three peaks, Akka-Koli ending in the to the northern end of lake Herajärvi, where you will get into canoes and paddle 6 kilometres across the lake to the heritage farmhouse Lakkala established in 1830's. In Lakkala you will enjoy your takeaway lunch by an open fire. You will then hike along the Herajärvi Circuit Trail from hill to hill. In the end of the 13 kilometres hiking leg you will pass the Mäkrä meadows full of wild flowers and conquer the other two peaks, Paha and Ukko Koli. The tour is physically demanding and requires good physical condition and swimming skills but not previous experience on canoeing. The tour ends up in your hotel, wher you can relax your muscles in the hotel spa.

Jänisvaara  is an authentic Karelian farm with fabulous, 10 km wide views towards Koli. The farm has also some domestic animals. By lake Pielinen there is a outside fireplace and a smoke sauna, which you will visit. Also swimming is possible, although water is rather cold in both May and September. What you will experince here is the most genuine, quiet countryside together with your group of friends.

Your tour leader Valentino Valkaj  is a self-taught, internationally published landscape photographer specializing in landscape and night photpgraphy. Valentinos's own art is focused mainly on nature subjects. His photography journey started 4 years ago when he bought his first DSLR.  Valentino moved to Turku in 2014 from Croatia.
