Self-guided Cycling Holiday in Finland

Self-guided Cycling Holiday in Finland

This self-guided two weeks tour  across Finland allows you to explore each destination by bicycle. Rental bicycles are included. Bicycles will be selected for you. The total lenght of the tour by car is 1069km. You can choose to book a rental car (appr. 1000€/5people, 1785€/7people)  or take a train (245€/person 6-8 people). Highlights of the tour:

1.  Lake district: Lappeenranta by lake Saimaa is a great location for cycling day tours as there are several cycling routes to choose from:

  • a 30km long route in the Saimaa archipelago
  • a 20km long route along the Saimaa canal
  • 40km to Imatra and same back
  • city tours in Lappeenranta (the most cycle friendly town in finland)
  • 358km Saimaa tour

New cycling maps are getting ready by summer  Additionally we are suggesting you to try stand-up paddling in Lappeenranta.

2. Forest district: Repovesi National Park (15km2) together with the private Aarnikotka Strict Nature Reserve (14km2) owned by UPM is located in the area of Kouvola and Mantyharju. You can find there large forest areas as well as high cliffs and tens of smaller and bigger lakes with translucent water. The fauna is versatile. There are red-throated divers, flying squirrels, owls, lynxes, pine martens, elks, otters and beavers living in the area.

There are several cycling routes starting from Mäntyharju, partly designed for mountain biking. The distance to Repovesi National Park is 38km. In the area of the National Park there are two unofficial cycling routes . The differences in altitudes are relatively high, which makes the cycling routes in the National Park area physically challenging.

3. The art city Mänttä: known for the Serlachius Museums, which both have their own role. The Art Museum Gösta exhibits art both in the original manor and in their architecturally impressive and prize winning new pavilion. The Historical Museum Gustaf tells the story of the legend of the Finnish paper industry G.A. Serlachius in an interesting way on a dramatized route of eight scenes.   Göstas's Pavilion has been designed by Spanish architets Boris Bezan, Mara Partida and Héctor Mendoza. It was opened in 2014. The building has won Spanish International Architecture Prize. It utilizes the traditional Finnish contruction material, wood, in a modern and new way. Indoors you can sense the space around you.

Here you can test the Finnish design icon, a city bike called Jopo to move around in the village.

4. 7 bridges archipelago  is the area around the small town of Jakobstad. The region is characterised by the sea and the islands, woods and lakes, open landscape and horizon. The area is ideal for cycling. A local guide will tell you about the routes on the first day and show you around after which you can plan your own trips

Glasbruket  is a holiday resort in Munsala. The high-quality villas are located on the westcoast half an hour from the small seaside city Jakobstad. There are three villas next to each others each having their own peace.  Each villa is surrounded by terraces so you can always find a non-windy place for sitting  either in sun or shadow as you like.  Each villa has its own sauna, jacuzzi on terrace and a well-equipped kitchen.  If these villas should be booked, we can look for another villa in the same area. Also available shorter periods outside the main holiday season (midsummer-end July) as well as fishing and rib-boat tours.

Starting and ending point  for this tour can be Tampere or Lappeenranta.  Finnair, Ryanair and Airberlin all fly to Tampere and Ryanair also from Milan to Lappeenranta.

Tampere is the 2nd largest city after the capital area and a town full of life and events. Here you will stay in a small, trendy hotel in the city center. You can find a lot of stores and a shopping center in a walking distance from your hotel.  Cycling theme of the trip has been adapted to a guided city sightseeing by kick boards (alternatively canoes).
