Shakespeare/ Adventurous Holiday in Lapland

Shakespeare/ Adventurous Holiday in Lapland

Pyhä-Luosto National Park  is known for its 35 kilometer chain of hills and its extra-ordinary beautiful nature. In the middle of the park there is an amethyst mine, the only gemstone mine in the world that welcomes visitors.

Pyhä  is a skiing center especially well known well among the backcountry skiers. There are 7 backcountry skiing areas available. Guided backcountry skiing tours are organised by the ski-school. There are also 150km of cross -country ski-tracks, part of them lighted so you can ski also during the polar night.

Activities in Pyhä:

1) Visit to the Amethyst mine is taken by a pendolino, a kind of "snow train". We'll do this at arrival so you will see the magnificent landscapes of Pyhä-Luosto National park in its beauty right away from top of Lampivaara hill. You  will then be seated in a wooden shelter, get some berry juice and hear a bit more about the purple gem stone called amethyst

2)  A suitable ice-climbing experience  also and especially for the kids (with their parents or guardians). Ice climbing wall offers tailored safe routes for the smaller climbers, where the ice axes nor crampons are not a must for a successful experience of climbing. Easy access to the climbing venue, roughly a 10 minute walk for Hotel Pyhätunturi. Perhaps footprints or some other signs of the infamous Tajukangas Yeti can be found on the snow…

A Bliss guide will wait for the clients at Hotel Pyhätunturi’s reception. After the meet & greet a Bliss’ guide will equip the clients with the relevant gear at the Bliss’ premises near-by. For the children’s’ climbing routes climbing boots are not a must. Then a guide will take the clients to Tajukangas ice wall and lavvu.

3) Cross-country skiing  requires some co-ordination but you learn it quickly after you get basi instruction. As your skiing day in Saariselkä is Sunday, we need to give you the basics in Pyhä.

4) Reindeer sleigh ride takes you to 3km reindeer sleigh ride through the frozen swamps, where you can enjoy a postcard scenery and healing silence beyond.  After the calming sleigh ride we feed the reindeer, take nice pictures and gather to warm kota hut to enjoy a cup of hot drinks and homemade pastries.

Saariselkä  is the most northern skiing resort in Finland. It is a ski village known as a cross-country skiing paradise but there are also 15 slopes and a lot of other activities, for example the longest toboggan slide in the country (=over 1 km). Part of Saariselkä is located in the Urho-Kekkonen National Park. The most famous Arctic hills are called Kaunispää, which is next to the village and Kiilopää, which is 17km away from the village. Urho Kekkonen National Park  (=UKK-park) established in 1983 and covering 2 550 square kilometres, it is one of Finland's largest protected areas. It is named after the former president Urho Kaleva Kekkonen.

The Polarauroracabins   are owned by a private family. They are traditonal ski cabins in authentic Lappish style. The owner cabin is organizing everything and taking care of their guests. The cabins are located very close to the bus stop in the Kakslauttanen area but far enough from the holiday resort on the road leading to Kiilopää.

Activities in Saariselkä:

1) Dinner and aurora snowmobiling  takes you far out hunting for aurora borealis. First you will have dinner in a Lappish hut, then take an aurora tour by snowmobile sleigh. As you are not driving yourself, you are able to observe the northern sky. You will stop by campfire to get some hot drinks. If ther weather is colder than -25 degrees celcius, the toru is taken by car.

2) Snowshoeing 2h takes place in the afternoon from yur cabin. Keep your eyes open as you might meet reindeer or rabbiits in the nature. After the tour you will sit by campfire, get some hot drinks and fry sausage. Price includes warm overalls and snowshoe rental.

3) Cross-country skies and shoes in your usage (or alternatively snowshoes). There are lighted ski-tracks passing your log cabin. You may well take a short tour on your own.

3) Husky safari 4h  takes you across the hills and forests to the wild nature. First the dogs are harnessed and then you will head for the wintry landscape with our enthusiastic runners. Driving a sled is so much fun when the terrain and views change. Children are sitting warmly covered in sleigh. When we get back, we’ll have some lunch or coffees in the Lappish kammi (Sami hut) by a camp fire. During our eventful day, you’ll get to know our Siberian Huskies and hear stories about these arctic runners. Who knows, you might even meet some new-born huskies…
