Wilderness Break in Finnish Lapland

Wilderness Break in Finnish Lapland

You would not expect to find such cozy luxury in the middle of nowhere, next to the Russian border up north. After four winter days in the wilderness you will arrive to the ski village of Saariselkä and can refresh your skiing skills. Last but not least you will get on a husky safari, an experience you will not forget.

Nellim wilderness hotel  is located by the 3rd biggest lake of Finland, lake Inari. The Nellim village is in the south-eastern end of the lake, 45 kilometres east of Ivalo. This is, where you will first stay for two days to relax.

Activities included in Nellim: a visit to a local reindeer farm 2h, at the hotel there are toboggans you can use for free

Sarmi Lodge  is a wilderness cabin by lake Sarmijärvi. It has cosy, superior bedrooms and a sauna. After 9 kilometres and 3-4 hours of ski touring you'll enjoy the next day by fishing, skiing or snowshoeing in the neighborhood and of course by having sauna. All meals are included and delicious meals are served for you twice a day. Four rooms have even their onw fireplace!

Activities included: snowshoeing, back-country skiing, ice-fishing, sauna & ice-swimming (if you dare), transportation in sleighs pulled by snowmobiles.

Nature  in the wilderness varies from flat to hills. There is forest and there are lakes. In Januray-February it can be really cold but typically it gets warmer daytime. From the wilderness lodge you  can make shorter tours if it is cold and come in to warm up every now and then. It is much better than long 4-6h safaris.  You will also get proper winter outfits for your stay.

Aurora Borelis  is a natural phenomenon with the highest propability to occur in September-October and again in February-March. The northern part of Lapland belongs to the auroral zone. There are auroras on the sky on three out of four nighs throughout the winter, even though you cannot see them if the weather is cloudy. You need a clear and dark night. The best time of the day is plus minus 2 hours from the midnight. Sarmi wilderness lodge is perfect location for looking at the auroras as there is the wide open frozen lake.

Saariselkä  is the most northern skiing resort in Finland. It is a ski village known as a cross-country skiing paradise but there are also 15 slopes and a lot of other activities, for example the longest toboggan slide in the country (=over 1 km). Part of Saariselkä is located in the Urho-Kekkonen National Park. The most famous Arctic hills are called Kaunispää, which is next to the village and Kiilopää, which is 17km away from the village. Urho Kekkonen National Park  (=UKK-park) established in 1983 and covering 2 550 square kilometres, it is one of Finland's largest protected areas. It is named after the former president Urho Kaleva Kekkonen.

Santa's hotel Tunturi  is a real classic in the middle of the village. Everyone, who has ever visited Saariselkä, has heard about it. It is a privately owned Finnish hotel with apartments in many different sizes. That't why we suggest you to stay there in a 3-bedroom apartment with own sauna and kitchen so the teenagers can have snacks whenever they want. Half-pension is included here as you can have luch at any restaurant. I am not particularly fond of the interior but the apartment is functional for your needs. In case you want more mordern interior, we can select a combination of a junior suite and a superior room instead (will influence the cost). Central location makes it possible for te teenagers to come and go easily also alone. There is a ski bus, too.
