Hunting for Aurora Borealis, Inari
Aurora Borelis is a natural phenomenon with the highest propability to occur in September-October and again in February-March. The northern part of Lapland belongs to the auroral zone. You can see auroras there on three out of four nighs, even though you cannot see them if the weather is cloudy. You need a clear and dark night. The best time of the day is plus minus 2 hours from the midnight.
Northern light forecasting is based on auroral monitoring with the all-sky cameras and magnetic field alarm systems. After collissions of solar wind and magnetospheric charged particles with the high altitude atmosphere are monitored, northern lights can be expected to be seen on earth in two days time. However, nature can be unpredictable. More information about northern light forecasts can be found at http://aurora.fmi.fi/public_service/
Ilmari Slant is an experienced northern light hunter. He will pick you up from your hotel or cottage by a mini-bus. By following the northern light forecasts he will drive you to the best Aurora Borealis watching places. If needed, even to Norway closer to the coast of the Arctic Ocean, where the propability of seeing northern lights is almost 100%.
