Southern Finland by rail with Stockholm

Southern Finland by rail with Stockholm

Ecological roundtrip by train through the southern lake district of Finland to Vaasa, over by boat, further to Stockholm and by ferry over to Helsinki. Experience the countryside and the archipelago, swim in lakes and sea, meet local people and taste local food.

Destinations:

Hämeenlinna  is a small town by lake Vanajavesi 1h from the airport by train. Hämeenlinna has a long history  dating back to the middle age, so we can well start from historical point of view. On the way to your hotel there is also the Lepaa gardening school with its large garden areas offering a chance to take a look at gardening in Finland and taste some berry wine or cider produced here. The third option is to get off the train already in Riihimäki and make a country home visit in Tervakoski in the middle of a Finnish forest.

Your hotel is located on a cape surrounded by the most beautiful lake nature. here you will have time to relax, have your own schedule and get on holiday mood. Depending on the time of the year you can choose the two outdoor activities you wish to try - for example angling or ice-fishing, Nordic walking or skating. hiking or snowshoeing. Finnish sauna belogs to the program of course.

Tampere  used to be the centre of the textile industry in Finland. Today it is the 3rd biggest town in Finland with its 230 000 inhabitants-  It is located between two lakes, Näsijärvi and  Pyhäjärvi. Almost 1/4 of its geogaphical area is lake. The best way to see the lakes is to get up in towers. Our local guide will take you on a tour visiting three of them, the picturesque old tower of Pyynikki, the newest hotel tower with a lunch bar on top and Näsineula, the sightseeing tower or the Moomin museun. If possible, we'll also take you on water either for a walk on a frozen lake or paddling by a giant canoe. For families there is also an amusement park in summer.

Vaasa  is the regional centre of the west coast and a gateway to the unique Kvarken World Heritage Archipelago. Vaasa is very close to the town of Umeå in Sweden. You will be driven by taxi to a small archipelago hotel with luxurious glass igloos, not for watching northern lights but the ever-changing sea view.  On the way, you will stop at the new World Heritage Gateway centre, where you can learn more about the continuously rising land.. One activity has been included in your archipelago visit. It can be bird watching, fishing or hiking for example, in wintertime walking on ice or activities on the ice.

Stockholm  will be your next destination after Vaasa and you will travel to this beautiful capital of Sweden by train from Umeå. In order to get to Umeå, you will return to Vaasa and take a short ferry ride to the other side of the Gulf of Bothnia. On the way south you will see, how similar Sweden and Finland look like.

After a night in a modern but simple city hotel close the railways station, you will have almost a full day to see Stockholm and if you wish, we can add one more night here as there is a lot to see. You will first have a 3h guided tour in the old town ending to the Wasa museum. You will learn, how Stockholm got its name, hear about the history of the kingdom and see the symbol of power from the 17th century, the Swedish warship Wasa.

A night ferry with a comfortable sleeping cabin and multiple services onboard will next take you over the Baltic sea to Helsinki.

Helsinki  is also called the daughter of the Baltic sea and the white capital of the north. It certainly looks beautiful at arrival in the morning sun seen from the sea. You will have a walking distance to your hotel on cape Katajanokka. You will meet your guide and take a look at the historical city centre, the Töölönlahti area and visit the National museum or one of the arts museums depensing on your interests. Next day you will still have time to visit Suomenlilnna sea fortress or listen to Sibelius music at a midday concert.
